About Fort Mill
The town of Fort Mill, South Carolina dates back to the mid-1700s and is located on the border of North and South Carolina in the northeast portion of York County. The small town is currently home to over 13,000 residents.
Fort Mill was originally the home of the Catawba Indians but was later settled by Thomas Spratt in the 1700s. In the town’s early days, it was known as “Little York,” but was later renamed to “Fort Hill.” The name “Fort Mill” was adopted shortly after from a British Fort that was located near the Steel Creek.
In the late 1800s, Fort Mill was incorporated and later entered the textile industry, bringing new jobs and opportunities to the residents. The opening of the Fort Mill Manufacturing Company grew the local economy and Fort Mill became a hub for the textile industry. For over 100 years the company grew, providing hundreds of jobs for the Fort Mill residents, and eventually changed the name to Spring Industries. In 2006, Spring Industries joined forces with a textile manufacturer in Brazil. This merge created Springs Global, which is now headquartered in Brazil, however, the company still has corporate offices in Fort Mill.
Today, Fort Mill is equipt with modern facilities and municipal buildings and is only a short drive from Charlotte, North Carolina. With affordable real estate and state of the art education facilities, Fort Mill is a wonderful place to raise a family or settle down for a slower, more relaxed life.
