Fire destroys home, but builds local business

FORT MILL TOWNSHIP -- Nov. 16, 1999, was a date that Dianne Kehler says will stand out in her mind forever.

Living in Ohio at the time, Kehler and her husband were working from home that day when the local gas company was out checking their gas line.

Kehler's husband knew something was wrong when he smelled gas. As he went in to tell Dianne to get out of the house, there was a backup in the gas line and it hit the pilot light in their fireplace. The back of their condo blew up.

"It was quite an experience," Kehler said.

Nobody was hurt in the blast, but the fire took out three other condos around her unit. It took builders 13 months to rebuild the condo and by then, the Kehlers had moved on with their life.
